With the intense summer heat now upon us, wastewater treatment plants need wide-temperature uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) rated to operate dependably at extreme temperatures.
One of Falcon Electric’s water treatment customers faced system failures and losses due to effects of high temperatures and inadequate office-grade UPS power protection. Fortunately, this customer, a large water treatment plant based in a fast-growing Southwestern city, discovered the solution with an online industrial UPS. This plant produces 40-million gallons of drinkable water every day through its multiple-stage process, taking untreated water from a number of sources and turning it into pure, clean water.
As the availability of clean, abundant water continues to be a concern – especially in the Southwest – protecting the networked systems and devices that clean and distribute this precious resource is vital. Power dependent equipment such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) networks control the entire water-treatment process and require clean, uninterrupted electrical power. Like SCADA networks, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), remote terminal units (RTUs), sensors, and variable speed drives are also sensitive to any kind of power disruption.

Industrial Production Operates 24/7 with Scalable, Redundant N+1 UPS
Scalable, N+1 Redundant UPS can be vital to protecting critical systems with reliable power 24 hours a day. Many industrial applications must operate 24/7. Industrial production cannot stop otherwise thousands of dollars and materials will be lost. The solution is an on-line UPS with redundancy, plus scalability for expansion. MILCOTS UPS: Meeting Mil-STD 810 for Shock and Vibration
Another problem that may be encountered is the UPS’s ability to withstand shock and vibration. The Department of Defense has issued MIL-STD 810 that details the manufacturing and performance guidelines specifying allowable parts and environmental condition ranges in which mobile equipment and computers must operate to meet compliance. In addition, the Army requires mobile-based equipment to pass the Munson Road Test. A commercial-grade on-line UPS having a UL or ETL Listing for operation over a 0°C to 40°C temperature range typically has been submitted by the manufacturer to a safety agency for an engineering evaluation. As part of the evaluation, a temperature profile is taken of the highest heat generating components and heatsinks to assure they do not exceed their maximum temperature ratings, while the UPS is operated at the maximum temperature specified by the manufacturer. A UPS incorporates many high power components that can overheat and not only cause the UPS to fail, but present a risk of an internal UPS fire.
